Broodmares

Sambourne Stud has 22 broodmares of which three are retired, they are Delphine, Good Charlotte and Poppy. Many of our broodmares are ex racers or mares that have proved themselves either in competition or as a dam. Most are registered Thoroughbreds, Warmbloods or Cobs and have come to us for a second chance in life where owners have not wanted them to be put to sleep or passed around. All are fit and healthy.

We genuinely believe in breeding quality and our progeny results speak for themselves with many of our customers coming back for siblings or another project because they are so impressed with what we breed.  We have had success in showing with some of our foals qualifying for Horse of the Year Show.  What does come out strongly is eventing and dressage those are certainly the most successful ridden career subjects that Sambourne Stud foals excel at.

Any scars and other unsightly defects due to an accident or injury are not a problem to us and we are always open to any potential broodmares you may wish us to consider.

Poppy
Poppy

Poppy is a 16.1hh Registered Weatherbys American Thoroughbred Chestnut Mare born in 2008.  An absolutely gem of a mare and one of my personal favourites (not supposed to have favourites). She is by Alke (now stands in Thailand) out of a mare by Unbridled's Song. Throws lovely big strapping foals of 16.3hh or more and they all inherit mum's lovely temperament.   Poppy has been officially retired in 2024 and is now living out her days in the OAP paddock with other companions.

One Cool Pet (Petal)
One Cool Pet (Petal)

Petal is a 15.2hh 2006 Chestnut Registered Weatherbys Thoroughbred Mare by Compton Place out of mare by Petong who won 5 races.  She has just a wonderful temperament, so easy and laid back and excellent to do in every respect.  Such a lovely chilled out character that she passes on to her foals.  Petal has had two foals to Dunhill Desert Storm and one to Sambourne Kratos.  Petal has been covered by Sambourne Kratos for a 2027 foal which will be due around March 2027.

Lissadell Romance
Lissadell Romance

Lissadell Romance is a 16.1hh 2007 Black mare by Grape Tree Road but out of the same dam as Montego Breeze and they are therefore half sisters.  Romance is much more heavily set than her sister and tends to throw foals that have more substance.  All her foals tend to have strong personalities and really do well.

Romance ran once as a two year old and has been a broodmare now for a number of years and has a lovely easy going personality.  A really big, well made individual which she passes on to all her foals, so absolutely ideal for Hunter classes or careers as sport horses.  Romance has been covered by Sambourne Kratos and should be due in March 2027.

Delphine
Delphine

Delphine is a 15.2hh 2002 Brown part bred Thoroughbred by Ormerod out of a polo pony called Milly. She was bred by the Druids Lodge Polo Club but did not like the "game" and was retired as a broodmare with ourselves.

Delphine is a lovely well made strong individual of a mare and has really good quality foals.  Really enjoys her role as a broodmare.  Delphine had her first ever bay filly foal to Sambourne Kratos on the 20th March 2021 called Sambourne Cybele.  Delphine has been officially retired and is now living out her days in the OAP paddock along with her other OAP buddies.

Dee Natra
Dee Natra

Dee Natra (stable name Fifty - Fifty Shades of Grey!) is a 16.1hh Grey Registered Weatherbys Thoroughbred 2009 Mare by Denounce out of a mare by Shahrastani.  A lovely loose limbed individual with a lovely personality.  She is so easy going and calm in nature you can do anything you want with her.

Fifty was trained as a race horse but never got on the track as suffered a career ending injury of both suspensory tendons being ruptured in both hind legs whilst in training.   Fifty had a buckskin colt foal on the 9th May 2022 called Sambourne Adonis, it is possible he may get lighter as Fifty is grey but I do not think he will change from that lovely dun colour.  As he is not a native he cannot be called a dun so the official term is buckskin.  Again this has been a long project to get Fifty to having a live foal so we are chuffed to bits we have got her there. Fifty has been covered by Sambourne Original Prankster for a 2027 foal which should be due in March 2027.
