Broodmares

Sambourne Stud has 22 broodmares of which three are retired, they are Delphine, Good Charlotte and Poppy. Many of our broodmares are ex racers or mares that have proved themselves either in competition or as a dam. Most are registered Thoroughbreds, Warmbloods or Cobs and have come to us for a second chance in life where owners have not wanted them to be put to sleep or passed around. All are fit and healthy.

We genuinely believe in breeding quality and our progeny results speak for themselves with many of our customers coming back for siblings or another project because they are so impressed with what we breed.  We have had success in showing with some of our foals qualifying for Horse of the Year Show.  What does come out strongly is eventing and dressage those are certainly the most successful ridden career subjects that Sambourne Stud foals excel at.

Any scars and other unsightly defects due to an accident or injury are not a problem to us and we are always open to any potential broodmares you may wish us to consider.

Star
Star

Star Command is a Bay 16.3hh 2016 born Registered Weatherbys ex racing mare by War Command out of a mare called Megaspiel whose sire was Singspiel.  She ran between 2018 and 2020 all flat races from 7f up to 1m 3f and was just too slow.  We have covered her with Sambourne Kratos for a 2027 foal.

Ella

Eleodora is a 16.2hh 2008 Bay registered thoroughbred mare by Dubawi who was unraced out of a mare called Elisha who is by a German stallion called Konigssluhl.  She has had foals with her previous owner who no longer wanted to breed and asked if I would give her a home as a broodmare.  Eleodora has run out with Sambourne Original Prankster and is due a July foal in 2026.  We are really looking forward to seeing what the foal turns out to be.  Eleodora is another Alpha A mare when out with the others but does enjoy company and certainly has her favourite friends.  She can be a bit tricky to catch but nothing too major and seems very chilled out with being a broodmare and being part of the herd at Sambourne Stud.

Indy
Indy

Rajlakshmi or Indy as we call her is a 16.2hh chestnut 2022 registered Weatherby's thoroughbred mare by the Ballyhane Stud stallion Dandy Man who died in 2023 and out of a mare called Geetanjali who is by a stallion called Roderic o'Connor.  Rather interestingly Montego Bay had a foal by Dandy Man.  Again Indy rain a total of five times right up to August of 2025 and once in 2024 on both turf and all weather. All her races were either seven furlongs or a mile and she was just too slow.  Her owner decided to retire her from racing and let her come to us for a life as a broodmare.  Indy is very bossy out in the field with the other mares, is certainly one of the Alpha females.  We have covered Indy with Sambourne Kratos and again we hope to have a March 2026 foal from her.

Zanni
Zanni

Zanni is a 2015 Chestnut 16.2hh registered Weatherby's thoroughbred mare by Rugby (USA) out of a mare called Alice Kyteler.  Zanni was ridden up to the Winter of 2025 where her owner, who had previously bought one of Sparkle's foals, decided that a ridden life was not suitable for her and asked if I would have her as a broodmare.  Zanni has an unusual branding (double upended horse shoe) so assume she was owned by someone who had common rights in Somerset which could be Quantock hills related.  When Zanni first came she was quite wound up and a little bit heightened but has totally changed into one of the most chilled out mares we have!  So easy going and relaxed.  We have covered Zanni with Sambourne Kratos and hope to see her first foal in March of 2026.

Bee
Bee

To Be Honest or Bee (as we call her) is a bay registered Weatherby's 16.3hh thoroughbred mare is a 2022 broodmare by Aclaim and out of a mare called Sincerity who is by a stallion called Iffraaj.  Bee ran three times on the flat - twice on the turf and once on the all weather in 2025 all over a distance of one miles with one race being one mile and two furlongs.  Unfortunately, Bee was simply not fast enough on all occasions she either finished third from last (twice) or second from last.  The decision of the owner was for her to come to us as a broodmare.  Bee has proved to be a really funny loving individual, she does make me laugh.  We have covered Bee with Sambourne Kratos and are expecting her first foal in March 2026.

Golden Secret (Goldie) is a 15.3hh Chestnut 2010 Thoroughbred Mare by Sakhee's Secret who was trained by Hughie Morrison.  Sakhee's Secret won five of 11 starts, with his July Cup win the highlight. He stood at Whitsbury Manor Stud in England for six seasons before moving on to Allevamento Si Fra in Italy, where he was champion sire in 2019 and 2020 and passed away in November 2021.  Goldie has had six filly foals to various stallions such as Showcasing, Swiss Spirit, Adaay and Havana Gold.  Goldie has a lovely temperament and is very easy to do.  Goldie is due to have a 2026 foal to Sambourne Original Prankster late July 2026.  We will keep you posted on the website and Facebook page as to the details of her foal when the time comes.

Moment De Reve (Mo) has come to us as it was discovered whilst she was in training, she was too slow for racing.  She is a lovely stamp of a thoroughbred mare standing at 16.3hh and is by Equiano who stands at the Irish National Stud and out of mare by New Approach and born in 2019.  Super chilled she has a lovely temperament and is so relaxed and settled in really well.  Mo has been covered with Sambourne Kratos this year and should be due in March 2027.

Excellent World

Erin is a 2013 16.1hh Bay Registered Weatherbys Thoroughbred by Excellent Art a stallion who won the National Stakes and the Mill Reef Stakes and being placed in both the Prix Morny and the Railway Stakes as a two year old and out of a mare called Granny Kelly who is American bred.  Erin ran twenty five times and was placed ten times but never won as a race horse and then retired to Norman Court Stud (Salisbury) where she had a filly foal to Sixties Icon in 2019 then another filly in 2021 to their other stallion Bungle in the Jungle.  She was covered on the 29th April 2021 by Rumble in the Jungle was subsequently sold to Mickley Stud in December 2021.  Erin then produced a filly (chestnut) foal in April 2022 which was sold at Tattersalls in December 2022 and was covered in May 2022 by the stud's resident stallion Massaat but did not prove to be in foal and was then sold as a project horse to retrain.  Erin loved being brought back into work but sadly her previous owner was unable to continue and asked if we would like to provide her a home as a broodmare which we were happy to do.  Erin has a lovely, laid back personality, makes friends very easily and since her arrival in November has settled in exceptionally well.  Erin has run out with Sambourne Prankster for a 2027 foal which should be due around March 2027.

Minnie
Minnie

Minnie arrived at our stud on Sunday 11th April 2021 to join our broodmares at Sambourne Stud.  Minnie stands 15.2hh and is by Compton Place the same stallion that Petal (One Cool Pet) is by out of mare called Splicing which is by Sharpo.  Minnie did race twice, once in 2013 and again in 2014, both were short flat races on the all weather and she successfully completed both races in last place!  None the less, we think she is a super mare, absolutely beautiful and sure to have a really smart looking foal.   Minnie was born in February 2011. Minnie has been covered by Sambourne Kratos for a March 2027 foal.
